Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is one of the more common childhood cancers that is abnormal growth of a white blood cell type called myeloblasts and monoblasts.
In paediatric cancer wards around the world, there's a bittersweet moment that every family of a child who has undergone a stem cell treatment knows. After celebrating a successful procedure, their doctor delivers good news that carries a shadow of fear: "The transplant worked. Now we wait – the next 100 days will be the most challenging."
While childhood cancer cure rates have reached an impressive 85%, most children are treated with drugs originally developed for adults, and the journey to recovery remains fraught with uncertainty about how each child's body will respond to treatment. But what if doctors could predict exactly how each child's body would respond to treatment before the first dose was given?
Last Friday, 15th August, marked the 20th anniversary of The Million Dollar Lunch, and the celebration was nothing short of spectacular, raising over $2.2 million for childhood cancer research, world-class clinical care, and essential support for families.
